Our complex physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual bodies are increasingly read through our individual DNA…our stories are also written in our blood. Still, with food-associated diseases like obesity and cancer claiming more than a half-million lives a year, we do need to pay more attention to our dietary habits.

When I talk about a blood-type diet, I’m not referring to a faddish regimen or a weight-reduction program…but about what I believe – and have proved time and time again – is a Truth in nature.

I hope these simple guidelines – detailed in my most recent book Just an Ounce of Prevention …is Worth a Pound of Cure – will be helpful:

Guidelines for Type O

You are constitutionally the strongest of all the blood types with the longest life expectancy, a well developed physique, and thrive on physical activity.  The first blood type to appear was an O – you require daily helpings of animal protein to meet your physical needs.

But watch out Hypoglycemia is more commonly found in an O who’s deprived of animal protein than in any other blood type. For optimal health, include several servings of turkey, lamb, fish, and occasionally organic beef in daily diet, limit or entirely eliminate dairy and wheat products. If ill or incapacitated, reduce protein intake and exercise only to their capacity.

Guidelines for Type As

The optimal preventive diet for you is vegetarian based. In general you are less active and don’t have the same need for animal protein, lack sufficient hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which makes the digestion of protein difficult for them.

You typically, suffer from mucous-related conditions and must avoid dairy products, whole-wheat products (although an A can tolerate germinated wheat, as the acid is neutralized).  The more beneficial foods are those that are more alkaline-forming…leafy green vegetables, tofu, soy milk, grains like rice, quinoa, spelt, amaranth, rice or soy-based pastas.

You have an over-stimulated mind which heightens your metabolic rates. For your  intellectual, artistic, and spiritual depth you are driven by nervous kinetic energy and rarely experience true natural energy. Developing an inner calm is, therefore, one of the keys to health and prevention program -- your workout must be oriented toward soothing the body, not further exciting it.

Guidelines for Type Bs

You generally have a strong constitution and good autoimmune system and can tolerate moderate amounts of dairy products.  If you were fed excessive amounts of milk, cheese, and butter as children, you will frequently suffer with catarrh.

You don’t tolerate whole-wheat products well so should take wheat substitutes like spelt, quinoa, and amaranth, and pastas made from rice. You are highly practical yet have one foot firmly planted in the spiritual world as well…fare well in competitive sports

Guidelines for Type ABs

You are the newest and rarest of the blood type… constitute about  two percent of the world population and possess the qualities of both A and B types. When in balanced state of health, your immune system tends to have an enhanced capacity to produce antibodies against infections.

Your diet should be geared toward vegetarianism, with the modest additions of some animal protein. You can’t tolerate dairy foods and are subject to mucus production and respiratory conditions.  Your mind is more active than your body. You should get slightly stronger constitutionally and more physically active.

It’s because of their sense of balance, not just in body but also in mind that I believe AB’s hold the fate of the human race in their blood.  They have within them, not the apocalyptic notion and sad demise of the world… but peace and nonviolence that can help all of us move into an era of positive transformation.
